How It All Started

Leighton Oosthuisen started training dogs at age 10 in South Africa. By the time he was a young man, he was a K9 handler working with bomb dogs, drug dogs, and Search & Rescue dogs — and competing at the highest levels in French Ring, Agility, Dock Diving, and Schutzhund.

In 1992, Leighton emigrated from South Africa to the United States. Five years later, he purchased an old racehorse training facility in Cave Creek called Lone Tree Ranch — and Partners Dog Training School was born. The iconic Lone Tree still stands on the main training field to this day.

What started as one trainer with a passion for working with dogs that others wouldn't take has grown into Arizona's largest and highest-rated dog training operation — two state-of-the-art facilities, a team of 50+ dedicated professionals, and a community of tens of thousands of families whose lives have been transformed. But the mission hasn't changed. We still take the dogs nobody else will. We still believe training changes both ends of the leash.

Our Journey

From a 10-year-old boy training dogs in South Africa to Arizona's premier dog training institution — here's how we got here.

1973

A Passion Is Born — At just 10 years old, Leighton Oosthuisen begins training dogs in South Africa. What starts as a childhood passion becomes a lifelong calling that will span continents and decades.

1985

From Apprentice to Head Trainer — Leighton joins a professional dog training school as an apprentice. Through dedication and natural talent, he rises from Apprentice to Instructor to Head Dog Trainer, while also serving as a K9 handler working with bomb dogs, drug dogs, and Search & Rescue.

1992

A New Chapter in America — Leighton emigrates from South Africa to the United States, bringing with him decades of experience in dog training, behavior modification, and competitive dog sports.

1997

Lone Tree Ranch — Leighton purchases an old racehorse training facility in Cave Creek called Lone Tree Ranch and founds Partners Dog Training School. The iconic Lone Tree still stands on the main training field today. From day one, the mission is clear: train both the dog and the owner.

2008

New Training Facility — Partners opens a brand-new training facility at Cave Creek with large indoor training areas, zoned air conditioning, and a massive 15,000 square-foot training field — purpose-built for professional dog training in the Arizona heat.

2017

DaySchool Launches — Partners launches its full-scale DaySchool program with 12,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor play areas, 10:1 dog-to-staff ratios, and a focus on well-mannered positive play. It quickly becomes the most popular program.

Luxury Boarding Upgrade — Partners upgrades its boarding facilities with luxury suites, tiled floors, industry-leading cleaning systems, and unique services optimized for the pet experience — setting a new standard for dog boarding in Arizona.

2021

2022

25th Anniversary & Partners University — On its 25th anniversary, Partners launches Partners University (PDU) with its first course, 'Pet Parents Guide to Success,' giving dog owners access to the methodology that has transformed tens of thousands of dogs.

2025

Foundation & Southwest Expansion — The Partners Dogs Foundation is established to support rescue dog rehabilitation and training access for underserved families. Partners begins expansion to other cities across the Southwest while growing its online course offerings.

What We Believe

Our Training Philosophy

We are balanced trainers. That means we lean heavily on reward-based methods, but we also believe in clear communication — including telling a dog 'No' when it matters. We use any tools, methods, and techniques at our disposal for optimal results for the dog and maximum success for the parent and their relationship.

Every training session is personalized to the dog depending on the stage of working a behavior. Our 4-stage approach ensures lasting results:

  • Teaching — introducing new concepts
  • Reinforcing — building consistency
  • Proofing — testing under distractions
  • Maintenance — long-term retention

Partners has the most advanced personalized training platform that curates each program based on each dog's specific needs and goals. Our staff attend conferences, pursue certifications, and constantly refine their methods because the science of dog behavior is always evolving — and so are we.

But methodology is only part of it. The real philosophy at Partners is this: training changes both ends of the leash. We don't just train your dog. We educate you. Because the relationship between you and your dog is the thing that makes training last a lifetime.

Beyond Training

Our Commitment to the Community

Partners Dogs has always been more than a business. We're part of the fabric of the Scottsdale and Cave Creek communities, and we take that responsibility seriously.

Our trainers pursue continuing education year-round — attending conferences, earning certifications, and staying current with the evolving science of canine behavior. We partner with local rescue organizations to rehabilitate dogs that might otherwise be unadoptable. And through the Partners Dogs Foundation, we're working to make professional dog training accessible to families who need it most.

We believe that better-trained dogs make better communities. Fewer surrenders. Fewer bites. More families enjoying their dogs instead of struggling with them. That's the world we're building — one dog at a time.

Frequently Asked Questions About Partners Dogs

Partners Dog School was founded in 1997, which means we have been training dogs in the Scottsdale and Cave Creek area for over 28 years. In that time we have trained more than 70,000 dogs across every breed, temperament, and behavior challenge you can imagine. What started as a single trainer with a passion for working with dogs other trainers wouldn't take has grown into Arizona's largest and highest-rated dog training operation with two state-of-the-art facilities. Our longevity speaks for itself — families trust us because we have the track record to back up every promise we make.

We are balanced trainers. That means we lean heavily on reward-based, positive reinforcement methods while also believing in clear, fair communication — including telling a dog 'no' when it matters. We do not subscribe to any single ideology; we subscribe to results. Every dog is different, and our trainers are skilled at reading the dog in front of them and adapting their approach accordingly. Our staff attend conferences, pursue certifications, and constantly refine their methods because the science of canine behavior is always evolving. If you'd like to learn more about our philosophy, schedule a call and we will walk you through it.

Yes. Our trainers pursue ongoing certifications and continuing education year-round. More importantly, every trainer at Partners has been mentored internally through thousands of real-world cases — from basic puppy manners to severe aggression. We believe that certifications matter, but hands-on experience under expert mentorship is what truly makes a great trainer. Our head trainers have each worked with thousands of dogs individually, and many of our team members have been with Partners for five or more years. You can meet our team to learn more about each trainer's background and specialties.

Absolutely. We work with every breed, size, and temperament — from eight-pound Chihuahuas to 150-pound Cane Corsos and everything in between. We also work with dogs of all ages, from puppies as young as six months to senior dogs who need a refresher or a behavior adjustment. At Partners, we factor in your dog's breed tendencies, personality, age, and history to develop a training plan tailored specifically to them. No two dogs get the same cookie-cutter approach because no two dogs are the same.

Three things set us apart: depth of experience, comprehensive follow-through, and genuine honesty. With over 70,000 dogs trained, there is virtually no behavioral scenario we have not seen and successfully addressed. But training your dog is only half the job — every program includes extensive owner education through private lessons and group classes so the results actually last when your dog goes home. And we will always be straight with you about what your dog needs, even if it means recommending a different program than the one you called about. We would rather match you with the right solution than sell you the wrong one. That integrity is why 50+ veterinary practices across the Phoenix metro area refer families to us.
