Mealtimes Shouldn't Be a Negotiation with Your Dog

If you've eaten your last hundred dinners with a nose on your knee, paws on the chair arm, or two big eyes burning holes in the side of your face — you've normalized something that doesn't have to be normal. Table begging is one of the most common manners complaints we hear from Scottsdale families, and it's also one of the most fixable.

Behavior Severity Level

Severity: Moderate

What you may be seeing

  • Nose on the knee, thigh, or arm during meals — persistent physical contact to solicit food
  • Sitting directly beside the table and staring at family members while they eat
  • Pacing between people at the table or moving to whoever seems most likely to give in
  • Whining, pawing, or vocalizing during meals when the begging is ignored
  • Materializing in the kitchen the moment any food-related activity begins
  • Positioning directly underfoot during cooking — a tripping hazard and a kitchen distraction
  • A dog who has learned which family members and guests will give food and targeting them specifically
  • Begging behavior that escalates when ignored rather than stopping
  • Table manners that have deteriorated over time as the behavior has been inconsistently managed
  • A dog who has figured out that certain social situations are higher-yield begging opportunities

What Is Begging?

Begging is, at its core, a behavior that worked. At some point — probably early on, probably during a moment when the dog looked particularly irresistible — someone at the table gave the dog a piece of food. The lesson was immediate and crystal clear. What makes begging so persistent is that it's reinforced intermittently and across multiple people. The dog doesn't need to be rewarded every time to keep trying — intermittent reinforcement produces the most tenacious and durable behavior patterns. Beyond the dinner table, food-related hovering shows up in the kitchen during meal preparation. There's also a real safety dimension — dogs who have learned that the kitchen and table zone are food sources learn to investigate that zone when unsupervised. The solution is building a specific, alternative behavior — a "place" that the dog maintains during mealtimes.
