Car Rides Shouldn't Be Something Your Dog Dreads — or Your Car Can't Recover From

If your dog starts panting the moment you grab your keys, vomits before you've left the neighborhood, or has to be physically lifted into the vehicle — car anxiety has already limited where your dog can go and what your life together looks like. In Scottsdale, where the nearest trail, veterinary clinic, or dog-friendly destination requires a car, a dog who can't travel is a dog who misses out. This is a treatable problem.

Behavior Severity Level

Severity: Moderate

What you may be seeing

  • Excessive panting or drooling that begins when the owner prepares to leave — grabbing keys, putting on shoes
  • Vomiting during or shortly after car rides, even on short trips
  • Whining, crying, or barking throughout car rides that cannot be interrupted
  • Refusal to approach or enter the vehicle voluntarily — requiring physical lifting
  • Trembling or shaking inside the car even when stationary
  • Frantic movement — inability to settle, pacing, attempting to climb to the front seat
  • Yawning, lip licking, or other displacement behaviors in and around the car
  • Bowel or bladder accidents inside the vehicle
  • Symptoms that begin before the car has moved — triggered by proximity or the engine starting
  • Car anxiety that is getting progressively worse, not better, with more exposure

What Is Car Anxiety?

Car anxiety is one of the more commonly underestimated behavior issues we work with. For most dogs with car anxiety, the nausea and the fear have become so intertwined that they reinforce each other in a cycle that pure anti-nausea medication cannot fully resolve. Here's how it typically develops: a young dog who is mildly prone to motion sickness has an uncomfortable car experience. The dog begins anticipating the discomfort before the ride even starts. That anticipatory anxiety elevates their stress response, which makes the nausea worse. There's also a safety dimension. A dog who is panicking in the back seat of a moving vehicle is a distraction hazard. The good news is that car anxiety responds well to a graduated desensitization approach. Unlike fear of unpredictable stimuli (thunder, fireworks), the car is entirely controllable.

Partners Dogs has been training Arizona dogs through every kind of car anxiety case for 28+ years. Two locations in Scottsdale and Cave Creek. Lifetime trainer support included with every board-and-train program.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. With the right training program and commitment from both the trainer and the owner, this behavior can be significantly improved or fully resolved. We've helped thousands of dogs overcome similar challenges since 1997.

Most dogs show noticeable improvement within the first 1-2 weeks of training. The full program duration ensures these improvements become lasting habits. Follow-up training helps maintain and build on the progress.

That's very common. Our programs address multiple behaviors simultaneously. During the assessment, we'll identify all areas of concern and create a comprehensive training plan that tackles everything together.

Professional training is an investment in your dog's quality of life and yours. Our programs include weeks of follow-up training, private lessons, and group classes to ensure lasting results. We also offer financing up to 36 months.
