If Your Dog Is Taller Than Your Counter, You've Already Had This Problem

Thanksgiving leftovers. Tonight's dinner. The avocado you set down for thirty seconds. If you've started treating the kitchen counter as a contested space — pushing things to the back, turning around in the middle of cooking to watch your dog — counter surfing has already changed how you use your own kitchen.

Behavior Severity Level

Severity: Moderate

What you may be seeing

  • Paws up on the counter when food is being prepared or when the kitchen is unattended
  • Food, wrappers, or dishes found on the floor that the dog has pulled down
  • A dog who drifts into the kitchen whenever food smells are present
  • Stealing food from tables, coffee tables, or any accessible horizontal surface
  • Counter checking behavior even when there's nothing up there
  • A dog who is perfectly behaved in the kitchen when watched but causes problems the moment your back is turned
  • Surfing that has escalated to regularly stealing entire meals or dangerous items
  • Children's snack plates, low tables, and outdoor surfaces included in the behavior
  • A dog who jumps up specifically during meal preparation or when the family is eating nearby
  • Behavior that persists despite repeated verbal corrections

What Is Counter Surfing?

Counter surfing is exactly what it sounds like: a dog who has learned to put their paws up on the kitchen counter, table, or any elevated surface and help themselves to whatever looks interesting. It is almost entirely a learned behavior — learned because it worked. The reason counter surfing is so persistent is that it operates on a variable reinforcement schedule — the most powerful reinforcement schedule in learning science. It's how slot machines work. Counter surfing is also a self-reinforcing behavior that owners have very little ability to suppress through correction alone. Dogs are extremely good at figuring out what the rules are when a human is present versus when they're not. Beyond the inconvenience, counter surfing creates real food safety risks. Dogs who steal food from counters don't discriminate between dog-safe food and toxic food.

Partners Dogs has been training Arizona dogs through every kind of counter surfing case for 28+ years. Two locations in Scottsdale and Cave Creek. Lifetime trainer support included with every board-and-train program.

Yes. With the right training program and commitment from both the trainer and the owner, this behavior can be significantly improved or fully resolved. We've helped thousands of dogs overcome similar challenges since 1997.

Most dogs show noticeable improvement within the first 1-2 weeks of training. The full program duration ensures these improvements become lasting habits. Follow-up training helps maintain and build on the progress.

That's very common. Our programs address multiple behaviors simultaneously. During the assessment, we'll identify all areas of concern and create a comprehensive training plan that tackles everything together.

Professional training is an investment in your dog's quality of life and yours. Our programs include weeks of follow-up training, private lessons, and group classes to ensure lasting results. We also offer financing up to 36 months.
