If Your Dog Has Hurt Someone — or You're Afraid They Will — You Need Real Help

Aggression is the behavior issue no one wants to talk about and everyone is afraid to get wrong. Whether your dog has growled, snapped, lunged, or bitten — you're probably scared, ashamed, and not sure who to trust with this. Partners Dog School has helped families across Scottsdale and Cave Creek work through genuine aggression cases. We're not afraid of your dog's history. We're here to help you figure out what's possible.

Behavior Severity Level

Severity: Moderate

What you may be seeing

  • Growling or snapping when approached, touched, or disturbed
  • Stiff body posture, hard direct stare, or raised hackles as warning signals
  • Lunging, snapping, or biting directed at other dogs — not just reactive barking
  • Attacks on other dogs that result in injury
  • Biting that has broken skin, left bruising, or required medical attention
  • Guarding behaviors toward food, objects, or people that escalate to aggression
  • Aggression that is targeted — specific people, specific situations, specific triggers
  • Aggression that appears with no warning (no growl or stiffening before a bite)
  • Escalating intensity over time — behavior that started mild and has gotten worse
  • Aggression that has persisted despite previous training attempts

What Is Dog Aggression?

Aggression in dogs is not one thing. It's a category that contains dozens of different behavior patterns with different causes, different triggers, different intensities, and very different treatment approaches. A dog who growls when a stranger reaches over their head and a dog who has bitten multiple family members are both "aggressive" — but they need completely different interventions. If you've been given one-size-fits-all advice, that's probably why it hasn't worked. The most important thing to understand about aggression is that it is almost always communication. Dogs don't attack without reason. They may be afraid. They may be in pain. They may be guarding a resource or a person they feel responsible for. They may have learned, through repeated experience, that escalation is the only thing that creates relief. None of this is an excuse. It is an explanation — and explanations are what drive effective treatment. Aggression toward other dogs (dog-on-dog aggression) is particularly common in the Scottsdale area, where dogs interact frequently on trails, at parks, and in neighborhoods with close proximity. It can look like explosive leash reactivity, but often there is genuine intent behind the behavior — especially in dogs with a history of fighting or dogs who have injured other dogs. This is a different category than reactive frustration, and it matters for safety planning and training approach. Human-directed aggression — whether toward strangers, children, family members, or specific individuals — is the most serious category and the one that requires the most careful assessment. The severity of a bite, the context in which it occurred, whether warning signals were present, whether the dog has a bite history — these are all factors that inform what level of intervention is appropriate. Some dogs with human-directed aggression need Transform Camp. Others can make significant progress with Behavior Camp and consistent owner follow-through.
