Your Dog Has Something to Say. Let's Figure Out What.

Whether it's the doorbell, the neighbor's cat, the wind, or just you daring to sit down — excessive barking has probably already cost you sleep, strained a neighbor relationship, or made you dread coming home to an HOA notice on your door. Barking isn't one problem. It's several different problems that happen to look the same. Knowing which one your dog has is where the solution starts.

Behavior Severity Level

Severity: Moderate

What you may be seeing

  • Barking that lasts more than a few seconds after the trigger has passed or resolved
  • Barking directed at the owner — persistent, escalating, clearly demanding something
  • Barking or howling reported by neighbors when the dog is home alone
  • Alert barking at sights or sounds that pose no real threat — the mail carrier, a passing car, the HOA maintenance crew
  • Barking that begins when the owner sits down, gets on the phone, or shifts attention elsewhere
  • Barking in the yard at fence lines, other dogs, or nothing the owner can identify
  • Barking that escalates when the owner tries to correct it verbally
  • A dog who settles only after extended periods — cannot quiet down within a reasonable time
  • Barking associated with pacing, inability to settle, or other anxiety signals
  • Barking that disrupts sleep, work, or normal household function on a daily basis

What Is Excessive Barking?

Excessive barking is one of those behaviors that seems simple on the surface — the dog is barking too much, make them stop — but is actually one of the more nuanced issues we work with. That's because "barking" is not a single behavior pattern. It's a vocalization that serves completely different functions depending on the dog, the context, and the underlying emotional state driving it. Treating all barking the same way is why so many owners try correction after correction and get nowhere. Here are the types we see most frequently in Scottsdale and Cave Creek homes: Alert barking is the dog doing their job. Something moved outside. A car pulled in. Someone rang the bell. The dog sounds the alarm. For many families this is manageable — the dog barks a few times, is acknowledged, and quiets down. When it becomes a problem is when the dog can't stop once they've started, or when every passing lizard on the back wall triggers a ten-minute outburst. Demand barking is your dog asking for something — usually attention, play, food, or to be let in or out — and using persistence to get it. This type is almost entirely learned behavior: it worked before, so they keep doing it. Anxiety barking is a different animal entirely. This is the dog who barks when they're left alone, when they're in an unfamiliar situation, when their routine is disrupted. This type overlaps heavily with separation anxiety and requires the same kind of behavioral approach. Boredom barking comes from a dog who has too much energy and too little stimulation. In the Arizona summer, when outdoor time is limited by triple-digit heat, this becomes a real issue for high-drive dogs. Reactivity barking on leash or in the yard at passing dogs, people, or vehicles is covered more thoroughly in the leash reactivity and stranger reactivity pages.
