When Everything Is Scary, Every Day Is Exhausting

If your dog isn't afraid of just one thing — if they're panting in the car, pacing at the vet, hypervigilant on walks, unable to settle at home, and startling at sounds most dogs ignore — this isn't a specific phobia you can desensitize one trigger at a time. This is a dog whose nervous system is running hot all the time.

Behavior Severity Level

Severity: Moderate

What you may be seeing

  • Panting, yawning, or lip-licking in situations that aren't physically hot or exciting
  • Constant scanning and hypervigilance — unable to relax even in safe, familiar environments
  • Startling at sounds, movements, or environmental changes that other dogs ignore
  • Pacing or inability to settle for more than a few minutes at a time
  • Difficulty eating in new environments or when under any social pressure
  • Stress signals that appear in a wide range of situations, not tied to one specific trigger
  • Shadowing the owner throughout the house, unable to be more than a few feet away
  • Vomiting, loose stools, or digestive upset in response to mild environmental stress
  • Physical signs of tension — tight muscles, low posture, tucked tail — as a default state
  • A dog who never seems to fully be "off" — always watchful, always braced for something

What Is General Anxiety?

Generalized anxiety in dogs is distinct from specific fears or situational phobias. A dog with generalized anxiety is anxious about most things, most of the time — and the anxiety doesn't resolve when a specific trigger is removed because the trigger is essentially the world itself. These dogs exist in a state of near-constant vigilance. It is a dysregulated stress response — often rooted in genetics, early life experience, or a combination of the two — that causes genuine suffering. In Scottsdale and Cave Creek, generalized anxiety has practical consequences that go beyond the dog's comfort. Arizona's sensory environment is genuinely intense. The family's life gets smaller to accommodate a dog who can't quite cope with it. The good news is that generalized anxiety responds to the right intervention. The key is that the work has to address the dog's overall emotional regulation and resilience — not just manage individual triggers.

Partners Dogs has been training Arizona dogs through every kind of general anxiety case for 28+ years. Two locations in Scottsdale and Cave Creek. Lifetime trainer support included with every board-and-train program.

Yes. With the right training program and commitment from both the trainer and the owner, this behavior can be significantly improved or fully resolved. We've helped thousands of dogs overcome similar challenges since 1997.

Most dogs show noticeable improvement within the first 1-2 weeks of training. The full program duration ensures these improvements become lasting habits. Follow-up training helps maintain and build on the progress.

That's very common. Our programs address multiple behaviors simultaneously. During the assessment, we'll identify all areas of concern and create a comprehensive training plan that tackles everything together.
