What Is Indoor Marking?
Indoor marking is one of the most frustrating behavior problems Scottsdale and Cave Creek dog owners deal with. This is a dog who walks to a particular spot, lifts their leg, deposits a small amount of urine, and walks away. The behavior is controlled and intentional.
Marking is communication. In the canine world, urine on a vertical surface is a social signal. The problem arises when dogs bring that communication behavior indoors.
The most common triggers: arrival of a new pet or family member, visits from other dogs, the presence of an intact dog, or a change in household routine. Intact male dogs are the most common indoor markers.
The challenge with indoor marking is that conventional housetraining approaches partially address it but don't fully resolve it, because the trigger isn't a full bladder — it's a social and territorial impulse.
