There's a Difference Between a Housetraining Problem and a Marking Problem — and the Fix Is Different Too

If your dog is reliably housetrained in every way except for those small, deliberate deposits on the corner of the couch leg, the guest bedroom door, or a particular spot near the front entry — you're not dealing with a housetraining failure. You're dealing with territorial marking.

Behavior Severity Level

Severity: Moderate

What you may be seeing

  • Small, deliberate urine deposits on vertical surfaces — furniture legs, walls, door frames, baseboards
  • Marking at specific locations that the dog returns to repeatedly
  • Urine deposits on the belongings of a new person or pet who has joined the household
  • Marking near entry points — front door area, back door, windows — territorial boundary behavior
  • Marking that began after a change in the household: new pet, new person, move, new furniture
  • A dog who is otherwise reliably housetrained but marks in specific circumstances or locations
  • Marking behavior that increases when guests bring their dogs or when a dog in heat is nearby
  • An intact male dog marking throughout the home despite frequent outdoor access
  • Post-visit marking after another dog has been in the home
  • Spots that have been cleaned multiple times but the dog continues to return to them

What Is Indoor Marking?

Indoor marking is one of the most frustrating behavior problems Scottsdale and Cave Creek dog owners deal with. This is a dog who walks to a particular spot, lifts their leg, deposits a small amount of urine, and walks away. The behavior is controlled and intentional. Marking is communication. In the canine world, urine on a vertical surface is a social signal. The problem arises when dogs bring that communication behavior indoors. The most common triggers: arrival of a new pet or family member, visits from other dogs, the presence of an intact dog, or a change in household routine. Intact male dogs are the most common indoor markers. The challenge with indoor marking is that conventional housetraining approaches partially address it but don't fully resolve it, because the trigger isn't a full bladder — it's a social and territorial impulse.

Partners Dogs has been training Arizona dogs through every kind of indoor marking case for 28+ years. Two locations in Scottsdale and Cave Creek. Lifetime trainer support included with every board-and-train program.

Most dogs show noticeable improvement within the first 1-2 weeks of training. The full program duration ensures these improvements become lasting habits. Follow-up training helps maintain and build on the progress.

That's very common. Our programs address multiple behaviors simultaneously. During the assessment, we'll identify all areas of concern and create a comprehensive training plan that tackles everything together.
