Walks Shouldn't Feel Like a Crisis. Let's Change That.

If you've started planning your routes around avoiding other dogs, crossing the street every time you see a leash, or skipping walks altogether because your dog loses their mind — you're not alone. Leash reactivity is one of the most common issues we work with in Scottsdale, and it's one of the most treatable. Your dog isn't a lost cause. They just need a different approach.

Behavior Severity Level

Severity: Moderate

What you may be seeing

  • Lunging toward other dogs (or people, bikes, skateboards) while on leash
  • Explosive barking that escalates quickly and is hard to interrupt
  • Freezing and staring, body stiff, before erupting
  • Hackles raised at the sight of a trigger
  • Pulling hard enough to choke, twist, or knock the handler off balance
  • Spinning in circles, snapping at the leash, redirecting frustration onto the handler
  • Reactive episodes that linger — dog remains wound up for several minutes after the trigger passes
  • Perfectly calm behavior with other dogs off-leash or in familiar settings
  • Avoidance behaviors between episodes — scanning constantly, unable to relax on walks
  • Owner anxiety that the dog reads and feeds off, creating a cycle of escalation

What Is Leash Reactivity?

Leash reactivity is what happens when a dog sees another dog (or a person, a bike, a car — the trigger varies) while on leash and responds with lunging, barking, spinning, or explosive pulling. From the outside, it looks a lot like aggression. Most of the time, it isn't. Understanding the difference matters enormously for how you approach it. The leash itself is the key piece of the puzzle. Many reactive dogs are completely relaxed when they meet other dogs off-leash. That's because the leash removes options. A dog can't control the distance. They can't approach, sniff, and decide. They can't retreat. They're stuck — and some dogs respond to that trapped feeling with an outburst designed to make the threat go away. It usually works. The other dog leaves. The owner pulls them away. The reactive behavior gets reinforced every single time it happens. Some reactive dogs aren't anxious — they're frustrated. They're over-aroused, under-exercised, and have never learned how to regulate themselves in the presence of exciting stimuli. Others are genuinely fearful, and the barking and lunging is a "get away from me" signal that's been amplified over time because nothing else has worked. A small number have genuine social aggression baked in. Each case needs a different approach, and knowing which category your dog falls into is the first step. In Arizona, leash reactivity has a real lifestyle cost. Scottsdale's trails, parks, and neighborhoods are full of dogs. The McDowell Sonoran Preserve, Chaparral Park, the Scottsdale Greenbelt — these are places you should be enjoying with your dog. Leash reactivity doesn't have to keep you off them. With the right training, most reactive dogs can learn to pass other dogs calmly, redirect their attention back to you, and walk without turning every outing into a spectator sport.
