Cute at Eight Weeks. Less Cute at Eight Months.

A puppy who mouths your hand feels like a love language — until they hit four months old and the teeth get sharper. If you've started wearing long sleeves around your own dog, pulling your hands away during petting, or worrying about your kids getting nipped during play — this is one of the most common calls we get, and it's one of the most fixable.

Behavior Severity Level

Severity: Moderate

What you may be seeing

  • Puppy mouthing during all forms of play and interaction
  • Mouthing that escalates in intensity when the person tries to pull away or redirect
  • Nipping at children's hands, feet, or clothing during running play
  • Hard biting during tug or rough play that doesn't soften when asked
  • Nipping that draws blood or leaves marks, even if not intentionally aggressive
  • Ankle or heel nipping when family members walk quickly, run, or change direction
  • Nipping to demand attention — biting at your hand or arm to get you to engage
  • A dog who puts their mouth on people when over-aroused by visitors, excitement, or play
  • Nipping that increases when the person tries to stop play or end an interaction
  • A dog past one year old who has never been taught reliable bite inhibition or a "no mouth" cue

What Is Mouthing & Nipping?

Mouthing and nipping are not the same thing, and understanding the difference shapes how you address each one. Puppy mouthing is normal. Every puppy uses their mouth to explore the world. The problem begins when puppies leave their littermates and arrive in a human home, where the feedback system has changed. Adult nipping is a different conversation. A dog past twelve months who is still putting their mouth on people has carried a puppy behavior into adulthood without the correction that should have shaped it. A separate but related presentation is herding breeds who nip at heels, ankles, or the backs of legs as a herding instinct. This is more common than many Arizona owners expect.

Partners Dogs has been training Arizona dogs through every kind of mouthing & nipping case for 28+ years. Two locations in Scottsdale and Cave Creek. Lifetime trainer support included with every board-and-train program.

Yes. With the right training program and commitment from both the trainer and the owner, this behavior can be significantly improved or fully resolved. We've helped thousands of dogs overcome similar challenges since 1997.
