Your Dog Shouldn't Have to Spend Summer in a Panic

If monsoon season sends your dog into a shaking, panting spiral — or if July Fourth through July Fifth is two days you dread every year — you know exactly how helpless noise phobia feels. This is a real anxiety disorder, not a stubbornness problem. And it responds to the right intervention.

Behavior Severity Level

Severity: Moderate

What you may be seeing

  • Trembling, shaking, or teeth chattering in response to thunder, fireworks, or similar sounds
  • Panting excessively when the weather changes or before storms visibly arrive
  • Hiding under beds, in closets, or in bathrooms during noise events
  • Attempting to escape — digging, jumping, pressing through barriers — during thunderstorms or fireworks
  • Destructive behavior specifically tied to noise events
  • Inability to eat, drink, or take treats during or after a noise event
  • Excessive drooling, yawning, pacing, or inability to settle before or during storms
  • Reactivity or unusual behavior in the hours leading up to a monsoon storm
  • Seeking constant body contact with the owner, pressing against or climbing on them
  • Noise sensitivity that has gotten progressively worse over multiple monsoon seasons

What Is Noise Phobia?

Noise phobia is an extreme fear response triggered by specific loud or unpredictable sounds. In Arizona, the two biggest seasonal triggers are monsoon storms and Independence Day fireworks. What makes noise phobia different from a simple startle response is the intensity and the duration. A dog with noise phobia enters a physiological panic response and cannot return to baseline for hours. Arizona's monsoon season runs from late June through September, and it is relentless for noise-phobic dogs. Fireworks are a separate and equally significant problem — the Fourth of July is the single biggest night of the year for dogs escaping their yards. Noise phobia also tends to get worse, not better, with time. Each storm season, the phobia deepens.

Partners Dogs has been training Arizona dogs through every kind of noise phobia case for 28+ years. Two locations in Scottsdale and Cave Creek. Lifetime trainer support included with every board-and-train program.

Yes. With the right training program and commitment from both the trainer and the owner, this behavior can be significantly improved or fully resolved. We've helped thousands of dogs overcome similar challenges since 1997.

Most dogs show noticeable improvement within the first 1-2 weeks of training. The full program duration ensures these improvements become lasting habits. Follow-up training helps maintain and build on the progress.

That's very common. Our programs address multiple behaviors simultaneously. During the assessment, we'll identify all areas of concern and create a comprehensive training plan that tackles everything together.
