Friendly Isn't the Problem. No Off Switch Is.

Your dog loves everyone. Every dog, every person, every guest who walks through the door. That enthusiasm is genuinely one of the best things about them. But when the love comes out as launching, spinning, whining, refusing to disengage, or turning every greeting into a full-body event — you have a different problem. This isn't an aggression issue. It's an impulse control issue.

Behavior Severity Level

Severity: Moderate

What you may be seeing

  • Inability to calm down in the presence of other dogs — whining, pulling, spinning regardless of how long the other dog has been present
  • Launching at people in greeting — not from anxiety, but from pure uncontained excitement
  • Escalating arousal that doesn't settle even after the initial greeting
  • Mouthing or nipping during excited play or greetings, not from aggression but from loss of bite inhibition under arousal
  • A dog who is perfectly behaved at home but becomes a different animal the moment stimulation increases
  • Over-the-top reactions to the leash, the car, or any cue associated with something exciting
  • Inability to hold a sit, down, or any known behavior in the presence of another dog or an exciting person
  • Play that escalates past other dogs' tolerance — not reading social cues
  • Barking or whining continuously in anticipation of greeting
  • A dog who has been described as "too much" by other owners at the dog park or on walks

What Is Overexcitement?

Overexcitement looks friendly on the surface — and it is, in a sense. The problem isn't the warmth; it's the complete absence of regulation around it. These dogs have never developed the ability to feel excited and behave appropriately at the same time. Excitement triggers arousal, arousal floods the dog's system, and at a certain threshold the dog loses access to the conditioned behaviors. This is not the dog choosing to ignore you. Overexcited dogs are often confused with reactive or aggressive dogs by people who don't know the distinction. But the internal state driving the behavior is completely different. In Scottsdale's dog-forward culture — weekend patio dining, hiking trails, off-leash parks — overexcitement is a real practical limitation. The overexcited dog is being left out of the life they'd love to be living.

Partners Dogs has been training Arizona dogs through every kind of overexcitement case for 28+ years. Two locations in Scottsdale and Cave Creek. Lifetime trainer support included with every board-and-train program.

Yes. With the right training program and commitment from both the trainer and the owner, this behavior can be significantly improved or fully resolved. We've helped thousands of dogs overcome similar challenges since 1997.

Most dogs show noticeable improvement within the first 1-2 weeks of training. The full program duration ensures these improvements become lasting habits. Follow-up training helps maintain and build on the progress.

That's very common. Our programs address multiple behaviors simultaneously. During the assessment, we'll identify all areas of concern and create a comprehensive training plan that tackles everything together.
