What you may be seeing
- Growling at family members, visitors, or strangers in specific situations or escalating in frequency
- Snapping that makes near-contact or contact when approached, petted, or handled
- A bite that has broken skin, left bruising, or required medical attention
- Body language escalating to threat display when certain people approach — hard stare, stiff posture, raised hackles
- Aggression that is targeted — toward men, toward children, toward strangers, toward specific family members
- Biting without apparent warning signals (warning signals may have been suppressed by previous correction)
- Aggression that appears in specific contexts: being disturbed while sleeping, reached over, handled around the face or feet
- Escalating behavior over time — incidents that started mild and have gotten progressively more serious
- Guarding a specific person in the household and aggressing toward others who approach that person
- Aggression toward children specifically — including children in the household
