If Your Dog Has Threatened or Hurt a Person, You Need to Talk to Us

People aggression is not the same as stranger reactivity. It's a dog who has growled with intent, snapped, or bitten a person — and the difference matters enormously for what happens next. This is the category of behavior issue that requires the most careful assessment, the most experienced trainers, and the most honest conversation about what's realistic.

Behavior Severity Level

Severity: Moderate

What you may be seeing

  • Growling at family members, visitors, or strangers in specific situations or escalating in frequency
  • Snapping that makes near-contact or contact when approached, petted, or handled
  • A bite that has broken skin, left bruising, or required medical attention
  • Body language escalating to threat display when certain people approach — hard stare, stiff posture, raised hackles
  • Aggression that is targeted — toward men, toward children, toward strangers, toward specific family members
  • Biting without apparent warning signals (warning signals may have been suppressed by previous correction)
  • Aggression that appears in specific contexts: being disturbed while sleeping, reached over, handled around the face or feet
  • Escalating behavior over time — incidents that started mild and have gotten progressively more serious
  • Guarding a specific person in the household and aggressing toward others who approach that person
  • Aggression toward children specifically — including children in the household

What Is People Aggression?

Human-directed aggression is the most serious behavior category in dog training — not because dogs with this issue are beyond help, but because the consequences of underestimating it are severe. People aggression presents in different forms: fear-based aggression, pain-related aggression, possession-related aggression toward humans, and predatory behavior (rare but serious). What makes people aggression particularly challenging is that it often develops gradually, with warning signals that were either missed or suppressed. Owners who correct growling without addressing what the growl was communicating often produce dogs who bite without warning. In the Scottsdale and Cave Creek social environment — where dogs are part of an active outdoor culture — a dog with people aggression is a serious safety and quality-of-life problem. It does not resolve on its own.

Partners Dogs has been training Arizona dogs through every kind of people aggression case for 28+ years. Two locations in Scottsdale and Cave Creek. Lifetime trainer support included with every board-and-train program.

Yes. With the right training program and commitment from both the trainer and the owner, this behavior can be significantly improved or fully resolved. We've helped thousands of dogs overcome similar challenges since 1997.

Most dogs show noticeable improvement within the first 1-2 weeks of training. The full program duration ensures these improvements become lasting habits. Follow-up training helps maintain and build on the progress.

That's very common. Our programs address multiple behaviors simultaneously. During the assessment, we'll identify all areas of concern and create a comprehensive training plan that tackles everything together.
