What you may be seeing
- Hard fixation on small, fast-moving animals — locking eyes, lowering body, going still before the chase
- Explosive launches after movement — birds taking off, lizards darting, rabbits appearing from brush
- Deaf to all commands once the chase has started — complete recall failure in the presence of prey
- Fence running, fence testing, or escape attempts when wildlife is visible or audible in the yard
- Pulling on leash with significant intensity when prey stimuli are present
- Wildlife encounters in the yard — catching or killing lizards, birds, or other small animals
- A dog who is well-behaved on-leash in urban settings but loses all reliability on natural surface trails
- Prey drive that triggers arousal spill-over — chasing leads to barking, redirected mouthing, or inability to settle
- A dog who has escaped the yard in pursuit of an animal and been found far from home
- Prey behavior that extends to small family pets, cats, or neighborhood animals
What Is Prey Drive?
Prey drive is not a behavior problem in the strict sense — it is a deeply hardwired biological drive. What training can do is build the impulse control and responsiveness to you that allows prey drive to be managed reliably.
Prey drive is actually a sequence of instinctive behaviors: orient, stalk, chase, catch, and in dogs with high drive, bite and shake. Different breeds have different parts of this sequence selectively amplified.
The Sonoran Desert creates a prey drive environment unlike almost anywhere else in the country. Cottontail rabbits, jackrabbits, Gambel's quail, lizards of every description — the desert backyards and trails are full of fast-moving things.
The goal of training is not to eliminate the prey drive — that is neither possible nor desirable. The goal is to build a reliable recall, a strong "leave it," and the impulse control to disengage from a chase.
