You Adopted a Dog. Not a Sled Team.

If you've returned from a walk with a sore shoulder, a twisted wrist, or the quiet suspicion that your dog might actually be training you — you're in the right place. Pulling on leash is the single most common reason people seek out a dog trainer, and it's entirely understandable. Every walk should not be a battle. With the right foundation, it won't be.

Behavior Severity Level

Severity: Moderate

What you may be seeing

  • Constant forward tension on the leash — the dog is always out ahead, always pulling
  • Choking, gagging, or coughing from collar pressure during walks
  • Handler being pulled off balance on uneven terrain or when an unexpected trigger appears
  • Pulling that intensifies near interesting smells, other dogs, or high-traffic areas
  • A dog who starts pulling the moment the leash comes out, before you've even left the house
  • "Yo-yo walking" — the dog bolts ahead, hits the end of the leash, drifts back, then bolts again
  • Walks that have gotten shorter or less frequent because they're too exhausting to enjoy
  • Handler who has switched to a harness, gentle leader, or no-pull device but hasn't solved the underlying behavior
  • A dog who walks beautifully in a no-pull device but falls apart without it
  • Pulling that has resulted in injury to the handler or someone else holding the leash

What Is Pulling on Leash?

Leash pulling is the most universally experienced dog behavior problem in the world. If you have a dog, you have almost certainly been dragged down the street, yanked toward a fire hydrant, or nearly face-planted on the sidewalk when a squirrel appeared. You are not alone, and your dog is not uniquely untrainable. They are doing exactly what no one ever taught them not to do. The fundamental issue is this: dogs move faster than we do, nose-first toward a world that is endlessly interesting, with zero natural instinct to match the pace of the person holding the other end of the leash. Pulling is not defiance. It is not dominance. It's a dog being a dog — and discovering, very early in their life, that pulling forward gets them to the thing they want. There's also a physical dimension that matters, especially in Scottsdale and Cave Creek where so many residents have large, athletic breeds. Pulling is annoying at 20 pounds. At 80 pounds, it becomes a genuine physical risk. Loose-leash walking is a learned skill. It requires that your dog understands what you're asking, has the impulse control to maintain it even when something interesting appears, and has practiced it enough in distracting environments that it becomes their default.

Partners Dogs has been training Arizona dogs through every kind of pulling on leash case for 28+ years. Two locations in Scottsdale and Cave Creek. Lifetime trainer support included with every board-and-train program.
