Every Stage of Puppyhood Needs a Different Approach

Puppies grow fast — and each developmental phase comes with unique challenges and opportunities. Understanding where your puppy is right now helps us recommend the program that will make the biggest difference.

🐾

8–16 Weeks: The Socialization Window

This is the most important period in your puppy's life. Between 8 and 16 weeks, puppies are neurologically primed to accept new experiences — other dogs, people, sounds, surfaces, and environments. Positive exposure during this window dramatically reduces the chance of fear, anxiety, and reactivity later in life.

Recommended: Puppy & Me Classes — gentle, structured socialization with other puppies and guided handling exercises for you.

4–8 Months: The Adolescent Phase

Your cute puppy just discovered they have opinions. Adolescent puppies test boundaries, lose focus, and develop new behaviors like counter-surfing, jumping, and selective hearing. This is the stage where most puppy owners feel stuck — and it's exactly when structured training makes the biggest impact.

Recommended: Foundation Camp (board & train) or Level 1 Group Classes — impulse control, basic obedience, and consistent structure.

🎓

8–12 Months: Building the Foundation

By now your puppy has size, energy, and a personality that's fully online. This is the time to proof skills in real-world environments — loose leash walking past distractions, reliable recall at the park, and calm behavior around guests. Dogs who miss this window often develop habits that become much harder to fix later.

Recommended: DaySchool for daily reinforcement, Private Lessons for targeted skill-building, or Level 2 Group Classes.

The Science Behind Early Training

Why Starting Early Changes Everything

Puppies are born with a neurological window — roughly 3 to 16 weeks — where their brains are uniquely wired to absorb new experiences without fear. After this window closes, unfamiliar things become scary by default. That's why early socialization isn't optional — it's the single most important thing you can do for your puppy's long-term temperament.

But socialization is only part of the picture. Early training also teaches bite inhibition (before those adult teeth come in), prevents resource guarding, establishes house manners, and gives you the communication tools to build a trusting relationship from day one.

Dogs trained before 6 months are 3x less likely to develop behavior issues later in life.

Waiting until your puppy is 'old enough' or until problems appear is the most common mistake we see. By then, you're not preventing problems — you're fixing them. And fixing is always harder, slower, and more expensive than preventing.

The good news? You're here. And that means you're already ahead of most puppy owners.

What Puppy Parents Are Saying

★★★★★

“We brought our 10-week-old Goldendoodle to Puppy & Me classes and it was the best decision we made as new puppy parents. She learned to be calm around other dogs, stopped nipping our kids' hands within two weeks, and we finally understood how to communicate with her. The trainers were so patient and made us feel like we weren't crazy for struggling — turns out, every new puppy owner feels the same way.”

– Sarah M.

★★★★★

“Our 6-month-old Australian Shepherd was a tornado — chewing everything, ignoring us completely, pulling so hard on walks we stopped taking him. We enrolled him in Foundation Camp and honestly didn't know what to expect. He came home a different dog. Reliable sit and stay, walks beautifully on a loose leash, and the Place command has been a game-changer for when guests come over. The transition lessons made sure we could keep it going.”

– James & Rachel K.

★★★★★

“Our French Bulldog was painfully shy as a puppy — hid behind our legs, wouldn't approach other dogs, and barked at every new person. DaySchool completely transformed her. Within a month she was playing with the other dogs, greeting staff happily, and her confidence at home skyrocketed. She still goes three days a week and absolutely loses it with excitement when she sees the building. Best investment we've made.”

– Priya D.

Puppy Training FAQ

As early as possible — and earlier than most people think. Puppies can begin structured socialization and basic training as young as 8 weeks old. The critical socialization window closes around 16 weeks, and experiences during this period have an outsized impact on your puppy's adult temperament. Our Puppy & Me classes are designed specifically for puppies in this window.

If your puppy is at least 8 weeks old and has had their first set of vaccinations, they're ready for our Puppy & Me classes. For board-and-train programs like Foundation Camp, we typically recommend waiting until about 6 months so all vaccinations are complete. But that doesn't mean you should wait to start — group classes, private lessons, and at-home guidance can begin right away.

For Puppy & Me classes, your puppy needs at least their first round of DHPP (distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, parvovirus) and Bordetella. We follow the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) position that the benefits of early socialization outweigh the small risk of incomplete vaccination. For board-and-train and DaySchool, full vaccination including rabies is required. We'll review your records at enrollment.

Puppy & Me is a weekly group class where you and your puppy learn together — socialization, basic commands, and handling skills. It's ideal for puppies under 5 months and owners who want to be hands-on in the training process. Foundation Camp is a 14-night immersive board-and-train where your puppy lives at our facility and receives professional training all day, every day. Camp is ideal for adolescent puppies (4–12 months) who need intensive structure, or for families who want accelerated results. Many families do both — Puppy & Me first, then Foundation Camp when their puppy hits adolescence.

Absolutely — and we recommend it. Many families combine weekly group classes or periodic private lessons with DaySchool membership. DaySchool provides daily socialization and skill reinforcement between your formal training sessions. It's the most effective way to build lasting habits because your puppy gets consistent practice every single day. Foundation Camp graduates especially benefit from transitioning into DaySchool to maintain their training momentum.

House training comes down to three things: management, consistency, and timing. Crate training is the foundation — puppies naturally avoid soiling their sleeping area, so a properly sized crate teaches them to hold it. Take your puppy out immediately after waking, eating, drinking, and playing. Reward outside successes enthusiastically. Never punish accidents — just clean them up and adjust your management. Our trainers cover house training strategies in both Puppy & Me classes and private lessons, and we're always happy to troubleshoot specific situations.

Shy and fearful puppies need socialization more than any other puppy — but it has to be done carefully. Flooding a scared puppy with too much too fast makes things worse. Our trainers are experienced in building confidence gradually, using positive exposure at your puppy's pace. Private lessons are often the best starting point for very shy puppies, followed by small group classes once they're ready. DaySchool is also excellent for building long-term confidence through daily positive social experiences. The earlier you address shyness, the better the outcome — fearfulness that goes unaddressed often becomes reactivity or anxiety in adult dogs.

Yes — socialization is at the core of everything we do with puppies. Our Puppy & Me classes include structured socialization with other puppies in a safe, supervised environment. DaySchool provides daily socialization with age-matched playgroups, professional supervision, and exposure to new people, sounds, and environments. Even our Foundation Camp board-and-train includes socialization components. Proper socialization isn't just letting puppies play together — it's guided exposure that teaches your puppy to be calm, confident, and appropriate around other dogs and people.
